Your domain is your business address and, as in the real world, for some businesses this is an important part of driving their success. Domain name selection is important as it's a long term decision and changes of address at a later date will often come at a cost to your traffic levels which may not be recoverable.
We've been consulting on and trading domain names for over 15 years. Don't learn the hard way, let us advise you of viable options and if necessary broker a deal for you to secure the best address for your budget. It may not be wise to secure a domain just because it's available for registration; often securing a pre-registered name or even a premium name will reap rewards in the long term and become an asset to your business.
For clients using our web design or email services we can register a suitable domain in your name and manage it on your behalf, including the technical support required for web hosting and email. If you have an existing domain name we can work with that too.
Most businesses that have a UK focus will benefit from using a .co.uk, or .uk, domain. Whilst .com domains are seen as offering a stronger corporate presence, availability is poor and premium domain prices are very high. However, research from Nominet has shown that .uk domains are usually given preference by UK visitors in search results over .com domains, so may well be a better choice anyway.
We hold our own portfolio of over 1000 UK domains, which we offer for sale at Domain For Sale . If you'd like access to a prestigious web address but budget is a limitation, then we offer payment plans. Alternatively, one of our premium UK domain names may be suitable for use in a Partnership with us.
Your domain name is your unique online brand and company identity, the ownership of a suitable domain should be secured as soon as possible. A domain name is a useful asset for your company and the cost of ownership is small. Securing closely similar domains, particularly the hyphenated version of the same name, the .co.uk/.uk pairing, or even miss-spellings, is recommended to protect your company's brand online.
For the majority of UK businesses the main choices to consider are .com, .co.uk, .uk and possibly .org.uk if you're a charity or non-profit organisation. Of these the most widely recognised are .com domains, but availability is very poor and prices for pre-registered names are high. They are good if your business wants a strong corporate presence or is global, but otherwise the .co.uk domains offer a better choice. It's well known that a high percentage of people looking for a UK business will click on a .co.uk web address over any other, particularly if they are shopping, so they make a good choice for most UK businesses. There are also the newer .uk domains, still not widely in use at this time, but expected to become the new premium UK domain once they are fully released in summer of 2019. In addition to this are a myriad of new top level domains such as .furniture, .clothing, .camera and many others. These are recent additions to the domain world and whilst there are some memorable examples in use they are a risky choice due to their current obscurity and are often quite expensive to register.
Currently hyphenated (hyphenated-domain.co.uk) domain names are not widely in use compared to non-hyphenated ones. Although they are sometimes easier to read, generally they are harder to pronounce, less memorable and aren't the instinctive first choice of website owners in the UK. If you do want to use one for your main website then be sure that you own both versions so you can re-direct any visitors to the non-hyphenated domain on to the active website. However, we don't recommend using a hyphenated domain name.
No, but in order to provide hosting or email for your website there will need to be changes made to how your domain is configured. For this you will either need your current domain registrar to make the necessary changes or give us access to your domain account for us to make them.
Nominet are the not-for-profit organisation responsible for the administration of the UK domain space, i.e. all domains ending in .uk, including the dominant .co.uk commercial space and the more recent .uk premium space. Splashweb have been a member of Nominet since early 2007, using the Nominet IPS tag name of "SPLASHWEB" for all our domain name registrations. Our registrar status allows us to register and administer our own portfolio of domain names directly with Nominet. The .uk domain space, as a whole, is one of the most populated in the world, with over ten million registered domains. Please visit their official site for more information on Nominet .
